Pingtung police launch drug raid ahead of spring festivals

TAIPEI--Police in Pingtung County raided hotels and guesthouses on suspicion of holding illegal drugs Friday night ahead of several high-profile music events in the southern county.

No drugs were found after 40 officers inspected hotels, inns and other locations that could be used to store drugs, a common concern during the beachside Spring Scream and Scream Wave music festivals, according to the police station in Hengchun Township.

Police noted that a total of nearly 100 people have been arrested for drug-related offenses during the past three years' festivals, urging the public to follow the law during this year's merrymaking.

Apart from the better-known Spring Scream and the Spring Wave Music and Art Festival, police said there will also be rock and electronic music events at six other locations April 3-6.

Chen Ing-fang, head of the Hengchun Police Precinct, said around 500 officers from the Special Police force, Military Police and Coast Guard will be deployed to maintain order and traffic control.

Local police estimated 200,000 people descended on the regularly sleepy township on Taiwan's southern tip last year for the music events, which spanned four days.
