Group calls for scrapping of Pingtung hotel project

TAIPEI--A group of environmentalists called Sunday for a hotel development project to be scrapped to protect land crabs that inhabit the proposed site in the Kenting National Park in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan.

It is estimated that 21 different species of land crab inhabit the site, said Hung Hui-hsiang, chairman of an environmental protection alliance in Pingtung.

The diversity of the crabs at the habitat in Checheng Township is one of the highest in the world, said another local environmental protection group.
