Updated Monday, February 8, 2010 9:53 am TWN, The China Post news staff Hakka Liuduei sports meet planned for later this monthA total of 12 townships in Pingtung and neighboring Kaohsiung County are ready to greet influx of tourists during the traditional Chinese New Year holidays from all around Taiwan and abroad. Minister Huang Yu-cheng of the Council for Hakka Affairs under the Executive Yuan said the Liuduei sport games originated from early Ding Dynasty as a gathering to exhibit martial arts practiced by early settlers to improve physical health and defend their homes. Participants in the contests and other competitions are not limited only to Hakka people. People of other communities are welcome to take part in the expanded events for social harmony and solidarity, Huang said. The wide variety of physical contests and performances will take place at the Chutien Junior High School this year. The programs will include games torch relay, track and field competition, ball games, and exhibitions of art works and agricultural products. Huang suggested that in addition to visiting the sport games, visitors may use the opportunity to take a tour of the Hakka communities as well as the cultural sites in southern Taiwan.
