Fired teacher compensated for ludicrous school rule

PINGTUNG, Taiwan -- The Pingtung District Court granted the equivalent of one year pay to a teacher who was fired for not abiding by a school rule that required children of educators to enroll in the school, local media reported yesterday.

The school policy established by Meiho Senior High School, widely known for its acclaimed baseball program, was deemed by the judge as violating the Teacher Act, said a TVBS report.

According to the ruling, Meiho will have to pay NT$710,000 in damages for the wrongful dismissal of the teacher, surnamed Chen.

Chen, who had been teaching history for 16 years at the campus, was cited as saying that he chose to respect his son decision to attend the Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School despite previous pleas to stay at Meiho.

Chen said he sued the school upon discovery that administrators will be withholding his salary.

Meiho was the representing school that had helped the country snag most of its wins in the Senior League World Series held in the United States.
