Woman found after being missing for 5 days

PINGTUNG, Taiwan -- An 80-year-old woman, who went missing last Friday when she went to pick mushrooms in Kenting National Park in southern Taiwan, was found yesterday morning by mountain patrol officers in the nature reserve’s Sheding Nature Park.

The woman, surnamed Hung, had set out with four or five people to go mushroom picking after Tropical Storm Kalmaegi brought heavy rains to the area, according to the police.

Hung got separated from the group during the excursion, and when she failed to return home later that evening, her family went out to search for her and reported the matter to the police. Police and fire officials began a search that same night that lasted for nearly five days before Hung was discovered wandering in Sheding Nature Park in ragged clothes, the police said.

Although Hung said she was feeling faint, she did not have any bodily injuries, according to the police. Hung told the police that she had encountered a tall female demon with long red hair on her first day in the park. According to Hung the demon asked her for her undergarment, but the elderly woman refused to hand it over.

The demon then began following Hung, who tried to evade it by hiking deeper into the mountains, and she ended up in Gangkou Village, according to her story.

Hung’s family members said her account was just a way of telling old folk tales, as locals often do.

The police said that the slippery conditions caused by Kalmaegi’s torrential rains was probably one of the factors that contributed to Hung getting lost in the nature park.

As Hung was physically weak following her five day ordeal, her family decided to take her to the hospital for treatment and observation.
