Elderly man dies in 3-km long-distance Kenting swim

PINGTUNG, Taiwan -- A 70-year-old man died yesterday from exhaustion and drowning while taking part

in a three-kilometer swim across South Bay in Kenting, in Taiwan's southernmost county of Pingtung.

Chu Ching-hui and two other swimmers also suffering from exhaustion were rushed to a hospital after they swam for more than one hour. Chu was pronounced dead, while the other two were treated and released.

Some 3,500 people took part in the long-distance swim, including 56 disabled individuals and 65 elderly couples, with the oldest swimmer aged 82 and the youngest, 7.

The event was sponsored by the Pingtung county government and Taiwan Masters Swimming.
