Pingtung man prosecuted for attempting to steal rare tree

PINGTUNG, Taiwan -- A man in the southern county of Pingtung was prosecuted yesterday for attempting to steal a rare tree in the county’s Hengchun Township, according to police sources.

The sources said that Chuang Heng-chi, 36, was sent to the Pingtung District Prosecutor’s Office after being nabbed by police after a failed attempt to steal the rare tree in the mountainous area of the township.

Before departing for Hengchun, Chuang had told his family members that he was going there to collect a kind of marine product. However, Chuang didn’t return the first night after his departure.

Chuang’s family members then reported Chuang’s absence to Hengchun Township’s fire department, which dispatched over 40 firefighters to join forces with over 60 relatives to look for Chuang, but in vain.

Later, the fire department’s chief Lin Kun-yu learned from police that Chuang had been arrested and interrogated by prosecutors.

Chuang’s parents subsequently voiced their dissatisfaction with the police’s failure to inform them of their son’s arrest.

In response, the police said they had asked Chuang whether they should inform his parents of his criminal behavior, hut Chuang insisted on not informing his parents, lest they should become worried.
