MNSAA to hold aboriginal wedding

Traditional aboriginal-style wedding parties will be held on Sept. 24, Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 at the Aborigines Culture Park (原住民文化園區) in Pingtung (屏東), southern Taiwan.

The parties with the official name “2006 Austronesian Wedding” are jointly organized by Maolin (茂林) National Scenic Area Administration (MNSAA), Tourism Bureau and Bureau of Cultural Park, Council of Indigenous People. In a press conference held recently at Taipei, MNSAA director Tsai Tsair-shing said that the purpose of the parties is to promote aboriginal culture as well as the tourism of the Maolin National Scenic Area.

MNSAA is located in southern Taiwan covering Kaohsiung (高雄) and Pingtung counties. Most of MNSAA’s workers are aborigines. Indigenous people account for about 60 percent of total inhabitants in that areas. Therefore, aboriginal culture is a major tourism resource for the area.

Tsai said this year’s wedding parties, continuing from the success of the banquets last year, will be held in the styles of three of Taiwan’s aboriginal tribes — Lukai, Chou and Ai Mei tribes.

In addition to the wedding parties, the following activities will also be held: aboriginal culture display, honey month travel package sales and aboriginal dancing shows. Tsai said after the wedding, new couples will get a taste of aborigines’ lifestyle such as living in traditional stone houses, eating aboriginal traditional foods and visiting aboriginal workshops.

Aborigines or locals and foreigners who like aboriginal cultures are welcomed to participate the parties, said Tsai. Last year, 38 new couples including two Austrian couples took part in the traditional aboriginal style wedding parties.
