Chinese, Taiwanese cyclists pursue their world record bid in Kinmen

TAIPEI--Nearly 1,000 Chinese bicycle riders and their Taiwanese counterparts cycled across the main island of Taiwan's outlying county of Kinmen Saturday in a bid to set a Guinness World Record for the most cyclists from Taiwan and China biking together in Kinmen.

The event was staged by the Kinmen County government's Tourism Bureau and the Xiamen Municipal Tourism Administration and several tourism and travel associations in the two localities.

The Chinese bicycle riders from Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces came to Kinmen with their bicycles on four passenger ferries from Xiamen early Saturday morning.

After getting together with hundreds of local riders, the Chinese cyclists set off from Kinmen's Shuitou Pier at around 9 a.m.

They expect to meet at around 4 p.m. in front of Kinmen's Juguang Tower, a building built in 1952, where a ceremony attended by Kinmen County Magistrate Li Wo-shi and other dignitaries will be held to mark the setting of a new Guinness World Record.

The event, aimed at attract visitors to enjoy "green" tourism in Kinmen, is part of the county's aggressive promotion of bicycle riding in the region.

In April, more than 1,000 bicycle riders from Hong Kong cycled across Kinmen Island.
