Hofman may pull Rubber Duck over possible copyright issues

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Keelung City Council Speaker Huang Ching-tai (黃景泰) yesterday issued a letter to vendors around the Rubber Duck exhibition in Keelung, warning them against creating another rubber duck to attract more visitors.

It was reported that vendors around Florentijn Hofman's Rubber Duck exhibition in Keelung intended to make another 18-meter-high rubber duck to draw more tourists and better sales.

Huang pointed out that a local team of organizers had contacted Hofman on Sunday to explain the situation. Hoffman replied that he would consider shortening the exhibition of the Rubber Duck in Keelung and end the contract in advance if vendors insist on producing another duck, which would constitute an infringement on Hofman's copyright, according to Huang.

Huang issued a warning letter to Yusheng International Corporation (鈺盛國際事業有限公司), the company which was reported to be in preparations to launch the second rubber duck, and the Port of Keelung, Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Ltd. (TIPC, 基隆港務公司), the lessee who would offer a piece of land on which to locate the duck if it is built, demanding them to cancel the plan in order to protect Hofman's copyright.

In response to the situation, the TIPC said in a press release that they would look further into the situation and communicate with vendors in Keelung to clarify if the second duck really exists. The TIPC said it would not agree to exhibiting a forged rubber duck.
