Army helicopters make first-ever cross-sea flightThe China Post news staff Helicopters from the army flew from Taiwan to the outlying island county of Penghu recently in their first-ever cross-the-sea flights, a newspaper reported yesterday.
September 18, 2010, 11:51 pm TWN The army's CH-47, AH-1W, OH-58D and UH-1 helicopters had to fly to Penghu to take part in a live-fire shooting drill, as there were no suitable shooting ranges for them in Taiwan, the United Evening News said. The helicopters took off separately from three army bases in Taoyuan County's Lungtan, Taichung County's Xinshe, and Tainan County's Gueiren, and it took them about 50 minutes to arrive in Penghu, the paper said. The flying mission was described as a difficult one because there were no recognizable landscapes at seas to guide the pilots, the paper said. The Army Headquarters said the mission offered good training for the pilots and their logistics crew.
