Mine clearing on Kinmen, Matsu making progress

KINMEN, Taiwan -- The military's efforts to remove landmines on two of Taiwan's outlying islands are making good progress, with demining work 46.4 percent complete on Kinmen and 33.3 percent complete on Matsu, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said yesterday.

According to the Anti-Personnel Landmines Control Act enacted in 2006, all anti personnel landmines on the two islands must be cleared by 2013.

Hsiao Tung-le, chief engineer of the Army Command Headquarters, said that 47 minefields on Kinmen and 35 on Matsu have so far been cleared.

On the disposal of waste ordnance, Chen Chung-yuan, deputy commander for ammunition affairs at the Combined Logistics Command, said the military decommissioned more than 50,000 tons of ordnance between 2005 and November this year.

While 93 percent of the materiel has been disposed of, the rest is expected to have been treated by June 2010, Chen said.
