Updated Sunday, November 22, 2009 12:10 am TWN, The China Post news staff Kinmen gov't denies funding MRT adsLu Chi-hui, chief secretary of the outlying island county's administration, said the Kinmen government remains neutral and will not support any specific candidates. He said Kinmen would welcome an investigation by prosecutors. Lu was making the denial in response to claims by Taipei City Councilor Chuang Jui-hsiung, who alleged that the Kinmen County government was funding KMT candidate Lee Wo-tu's campaign ads. Chuang alleged that the Kinmen government funded the ads posted at four Taipei MRT stations, plus TV ads on the MRT's broadcast system that started Nov. 15 to support Lee, who is running for the county magistrate seat. Chuang claimed such funding was illegal, and might have constituted a case of vote-buying, which violates election and TV broadcast laws. He said his claims were supported by MRT documents that showed the ad client was the Kinmen County government. But the MRT company clarified that the advertisements were taken out by a campaign fund belonging to Lee. The company said the confusion about the identity of the client might have been the result of a typo by employees. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
