Penghu's casino referendum opposedLin Chang-hsing, convener of the alliance, called on the Penghu county government not to call a referendum on September 26 to set up a casino on the island in the Taiwan Strait. “It'll be a ridiculous referendum,” Lin said. The county government does not adhere to the Referendum Law, Lin charged. “According to its own bylaw,” Lin said, “the referendum will be passed by a simple majority vote with less than half of the electorate taking part.” The Referendum Law invalidates a referendum if not more than half of the electorate votes. As a matter of fact, none of the six referendums voted on in the past five years was declared valid for less than half of the electorate voted. “The referendum the county government is planning to hold is invalid, if not more than 50 percent of the voters vote,” Lin said. A Penghu county government spokesman said the referendum will take place as scheduled. | |||||||||||||
