Taiwan's highest mountain sealed off for sustainability

NANTOU, Taiwan -- Mount Yushan, Taiwan's highest peak, was sealed off yesterday to give the mountain a month-long respite from human encroachment and ensure its sustainability.

Hundreds of activists gathered at an entrance to Yushan National Park in central Taiwan to read a statement announcing the beginning of the shutdown, which will end on March 5.

No applications for any activity on the mountain — also known as Jade Mountain — will be accepted during the period.

The park administration has taken the measure every year since 2005 to give the park's many species and communities a chance to revitalize themselves.

The activists also called on the public to vote for the 3,952-meter high mountain, the highest in Northeast Asia, in a global online poll being held to select the seven new natural wonders of the world.
