Hiker found dead from hypothermia in Nantou

NANTOU, Taiwan -- The cold weather attracted many people into mountains to enjoy snowy holidays, but a hiker was found dead due to hypothermia in Nantou County yesterday.

A civil group entered Renai Township in Nantou on Dec. 30 for a 6-day hiking activity, said Nantou's fire department.

The fire department received a rescue request at 9 p.m. Dec. 31 that a hiker showed symptoms of hypothermia in the mountains.

The team was located in a remote area in the mountains; the hiker, surnamed Chen, was found dead when the rescue team arrived on Jan. 1.

According to the fire department, the incident happened nearby the “Taiwan Lake.” The temperature was below zero degrees at night.
