Overturned auto accident kills two

NANTOU, Taiwan -- Two workers en route to pick tea leaves in a mountainous region in central Taiwan were killed after a truck carrying seven plunged to the bottom of a ravine yesterday, local media reported.

The remaining five suffered from severe fractures, said the United Evening News. This marks the second accident in the last week involving tea-picking workers.

The Nantou County Fire Department said the driver had likely lost control of the vehicle as he steered around curves going uphill before overturning.

The vehicle was also carrying more than the permitted number of passengers. The fatalities involved one elderly woman and a young girl, both of whom did not respond to emergency resuscitation, said the report.
