Councilor gets 4 months for offering trips to voters

NANTOU, Taiwan -- A Nantou County councilor was sentenced yesterday to four months imprisonment by the local court for attempting to influence voters with free trips.

The accused, Song Chiu-ming from Xinyi Village, was invited by the assistant of councilor candidate Lin Chung-te to take voters to Macau for a sightseeing trip paid by Lin. Lin showed up during the trip and canvassed the voters in person.

Since Song's expenses were also paid by Lin, the Nantou District Court convicted him for both giving improper benefits to voters and receiving benefits as a voter himself.

Lin's bribery charge will be determined in a separate case.
