When the bus began to move from side to side, Chang Seng, a passenger with 15 years of bus-driving experience, approached Lin to ask if there was anything wrong with the bus. Instead, Chang found the driver unconscious; his hands were still grasping the wheel and his foot remained on the accelerator. Knowing the seriousness of the condition, Chang sprung to action and held the wheel steady with one hand while pulling Lin's leg away from the gas pedal with another. Then he turned off the engine before reaching for the brakes. In the end Chang managed to pull the bus over to the curb. With the help of the other two passengers in the bus, Chang moved Lin out of the bus and called firefighters for help. Lin was rushed to the hospital where he was found to be in grave condition.
