Chinese tourists to celebrate at Sun Moon

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More than 1,000 Chinese tourists will celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival at the scenic Sun Moon Lake in the central county of Nantou, officials said yesterday.

The festival, one of the major holidays on the Chinese calendar, falls on Oct. 3 this year.

In anticipation of the occasion, the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration will put on a free lakefront concert and a fireworks show for visitors on the night of the holiday.

The expected visitors to the area will include several groups of Chinese tourists totaling more than 1,000 people, who will gather at the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village for a party then move lakeside to admire the full moon, according to officials at the Nantou County government.

The official said Nantou's tourism marketing division has been focusing on promoting festival tourism and that the strategy has produced good results.

For example, a special package launched during the Chinese New Year holiday in 2008 attracted more than 3,000 Chinese tourists, and approximately 2,000 Chinese tourists took part in the 27th mass swim across Sun Moon Lake on Sept. 20.
