Nearly 26,000 to swim across Sun Moon Lake

NANTOU -- Nearly 26,000 swimmers from home and abroad will gather Sunday for the annual Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival, an event which was first held in 1983 and has attracted an increasing number of participants over the years.

The Nantou County Government said that Premier Wu Den-yih, who started the event when he was Nantou County magistrate 27 years ago, will open this year's swim across the lake.

Having begun as a domestic event drawing some 500 participants almost three decades ago, the 3,000-meter swim drew over 20,000 participants for the first time in 2006, and its size has earned the recognition of the International Olympic Committee.

Among the 25,888 swimmers registered to take part this year, 1,545 are from foreign countries, including the United States, South Africa, Britain, Japan, Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands, and China, according to the organizer.
