University student confesses to murdering coed

The China Post news staff--Police formally identified yesterday a 22-year-old male student of Miaoli City's National United University (聯合大學) as the suspected Murderer of a female college graduate. The man, who is surnamed Lin, faces investigation by prosecutors on the charges of murder and sexual assault.

At first evasive during questioning, remaining cool about his possible involvement, Lin eventually confessed to stabbing the woman more than a dozen times, police said.

He led them to recover a bag containing evidence against him, including blood-stained clothes and slippers, a computer memory stick, a notebook, and a bottle of kaoliang (sorghum) liquor he had hidden in a room of the administrative building on campus.

Lin told the police that he and the coed, also surnamed Lin, rented separate rooms on different floors of the same apartment building.

He noticed that Lin, who just graduated from the NUU, was moving at noon on Thursday, June 28 and planned to report to work as an intern at a TV station.

He offered to help her to move her belongings. He also asked twice for her phone number, and both times was rejected.

Lin returned to her room again at around 5:00 p.m. with a fruit knife to stab her 16 times. Police found that the deep wounds in the back of the girl's neck were the cause for her death.

He admitted to undressing her with the intent of committing a sexual act but had to give up because he "could not get an erection" at the time.

The suspect also told the police he then tried to use water to wash away the blood in her room and returned to his own room to clean up and went out with a bag containing the blood-stained items.

After police started an investigation, he hid in the school's administrative building and spent the night at a professor's office.

Police found the suspect attempted to mislead the probe by creating a story in his notebook that fabricated the scenario in which the victim had a quarrel with her boyfriend and he tried to be a peacemaker to help settle the couple's rift.

He described himself in the story as a victim threatened and held as a hostage by the girl's boyfriend.

In an attempt to separate himself from the murder and mislead investigators, he even sent messages about the fabricated story to his parents living in Taoyuan.

Lin did not mention that he had a crush on the victim.

When confessing to murdering the female student, he said only that he seemed "to have done a stupid thing."

A Loner

The police and classmates of the suspect said he is the only child in his family. They described him mainly as a loner who has few friends and spent most of his free time reading comic books, watching TV movies, and playing online games.

No one heard of Lin ever dating any girls.

But they were surprised that he could be so cruel to stab a woman to death just for refusing to give him her phone number.

Prosecutors said they will verify if Lin had sexually assaulted the victim after the autopsy results are released.

The murder has sent shockwaves through the university. Those who knew the victim started a campaign to pray for her on the Facebook. Close to 3,000 classmates, fellow students and others have left their condolences and messages over the past two days.
