Family charcoal suicide kills three generations

MIAOLI, Taiwan -- A tremendous tragedy took place at Zhunan Township of Miaoli County on Sunday, when a family of three generations committed suicide by burning charcoal. The police pointed out the people involved include the grandson, the mother, and the grandmother; they were declared dead after rushing to the hospital. The reason for committing suicide is under investigation with economic crisis being a possible cause.

According to the police, the grandson's teacher called the father after realizing the child was absent from class on the morning of Oct. 12. The father then rushed home and found his wife, his mother, and his son unconscious from a lack of oxygen caused from burning charcoal.

During police investigation, it was discovered that the grandmother had been borrowing money from neighbors and her daughter to pay the heavy debt owned by her son. After hearing about the deaths and seeing the dead members of his family, the grandfather of the child immediately fainted in the hospital.
