Old couple dies on Miaoli highway while visiting son

MIAOLI, Taiwan -- A 68-year-old man carrying his wife on a motorcycle were killed in a crash on a Miaoli highway, yesterday. The couple, both suffered from severe head and chest injuries in the accident, and were pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital, said officials.

The man, a Hsinchu City resident surnamed Xu, was an experienced rider who rode around the island several times. When Xu was riding to visit his son in Taichung with his wife yesterday, they were hit by an SUV, according to officials.

The SUV driver, a woman surnamed Han, allegedly told the police that she saw in the rearview mirror that more than 10 heavy motorcycles riding alongside the couple, and after the motorcycles passed, she heard a crashing noise. She stopped and got out, and found the couple injured on the road and called the police immediately.
