MAIOLI, Taiwan -- A swarm of bees attacked a group of mountain hikers in Miaoli County and injured four of them with stings, including one woman victim who lost consciousness.
Forty-three members of a mountaineering club from Chungli in Taoyuan County went to Miaoli mountains for a hiking trip yesterday. They divided into two teams and one of the squads ran into a swarm of bees in the forest. The experienced hikers stood still when the bees appeared in the hope of not annoying the insects. But for unknown reasons, the bees still launched an attack and inflicted poisonous stings onto four of them.
One woman became unconscious and her teammates called for help. A rescue team used a stretcher to take her to a hospital for treatment after a few hours.
The other three victims were not in serious condition, said a team leader.
