Taipower mistake causes 80 air conditioners to blow

MIAOLI, Taiwan -- Over 70 residences in Miaoli saw their household electricity supplies cut off Saturday as a result of a maintenance mishap, the local Apple Daily reported.

The blackout caused at least NT$2 million in damages, according to the paper.

The power outage took place at nearly 6 a.m. Saturday, when Taiwan Power Co. mechanics went to the neighborhood seeking to repair a transformer, which had an oil leak.

When they tried to put the adjuster back to the transformer, they mistakenly set the power output at 380 volt instead of 110/220 that they were supposed to. The higher-than-usual power output caused 80 air-conditioners and nine TV sets to be broken, the report said.

A delay in restoring power and bad attitudes of Taipower customer service workers caused even more resentment of residents, the paper said.

Later on, Shih Jih-tian, a manager of the Taipower, said that the company will compensate for the residents' losses and will improve the quality of its customer service operation.
