AIT Kaohsiung will celebrate Earth Day with multiple events

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The American Institute in Taiwan's (AIT) Kaohsiung branch office will be holding a series of events to celebrate Earth Day 2014 that falls on Tuesday, April 22, the AIT announced yesterday.

On Earth Day 2014, AIT Kaohsiung employees will participate in two special activities, starting with picking up litter at the Chai Shan Hiking Trail (柴山步道) and moving on to volunteering at the Tzu Chi Foundation, sorting recyclable materials, the AIT said in a released statement.

On Saturday, April 26, AIT/K will participate in a 5-kilometer fun run organized by National Cheng Kung University (成功大學, NCKU) in Tainan to promote healthy lifestyles and mark the opening of a special exhibit on “American College Sports” at NCKU's Art Center, it noted.

Meanwhile, in the statement the office reaffirmed the commitment of the U.S. to find solutions to global environmental concerns and praised Southern Taiwan's remarkable progress in environmental issues over the course of a number of years.

The office said cities in Southern Taiwan have made remarkable progress in becoming “greener” over the past decade and a half since the office was opened in 1979.

“For example, Kaohsiung's Love River, once an eyesore filled with industrial wastewater, has become the symbol of green transformation for the city along with the development of green spaces, restored wetlands and extensive bike trails,” AIT said.

“Tainan is adding to its legacy as Taiwan's original capital city by becoming a leader in the promotion of energy-saving smart grids and solar energy,” it added.

Pingtung has been promoting innovative solar energy and bio-gas projects while the offshore island of Penghu has begun making use of wind power, one of its most abundant natural resources, AIT continued.
