Police assist motorcyclist in preventing cousin's suicide

KAOHSIUNG -- When police in the southern city of Kaohsiung pulled over a speeding motorcyclist Sunday, they did not expect they would end up escorting him to his destination and help him save a life.

Police in the city's populous Sanmin District said Monday that they intercepted the motorcyclist, identified by his surname Huang, after he sped through a red light at an intersection.

Huang, who was reportedly extremely agitated when stopped, told the officer who pulled him over that he was trying to get to a nearby building before his cousin jumped to his death.

Instead of issuing a ticket, police activated their sirens and escorted Huang to the building, where they found Huang's cousin standing on a 19th floor window sill and shouting incessantly.

Working together, they managed to calm the cousin down and convince him to return to safety indoors, police said.

Even though Huang helped save a life, he broke the law by speeding and driving on a red light. Authoriteis were still considering whether to fine him for the offenses on Monday.
