Xu accepted Chen's invitation, saying he will be pleased to participate in the Asia-Pacific Cities Summit scheduled to take place Sept. 9-11 in Kaohsiung, Southern Taiwan.
The two mayors also exchanged views on a range of topics of mutual interest, including urban development, harbor service modernization and promotion of cooperation between their respective cities.
Chen praised Shenzhen in Guangdong Province in southern China for its rapid development, noting that it has overtaken Kaohsiung in port traffic and has emerged as the world's third-largest container port.
The two mayors agreed that there is ample room for Kaohsiung and Shenzhen to cooperate. In the first stage, they promised to resolve the issue of inadequate traffic between the two port cities, especially seeking an increase of direct flights.
