Car accident in Kaohsiung leaves four dead, one injured

The driver, a 23-year-old surnamed Lin, was traveling along a road at the city's Niaosong District (鳥松區) around 5:10 a.m. when the accident took place, police said.

Lin and two passengers were thrown from the car after it went out of control and crashed into a utility pole on the opposite side of the road.

Four, including Lin, were later pronounced dead in a nearby hospital. The sole survivor, surnamed Chen, sustained bone fractures. Chen's younger sister, however, died in the accident.

With the exception of Lin, all of those who died in accident were teenagers and high school students, police said.

Initial investigations indicate that Lin was driving without a license.

Police suspect that the cause of the accident was due to the driver's fatigue or his lack of experience in driving.

The car was a rental but the person who rented the car was a man surnamed Chang. Police are still probing as to why the sedan was driven by Lin, instead of Chang, when the accident occurred.

Chang could be held responsible for allowing Lin to drive off with car, police added.

Chen's family members told police that Lin was picking up the four for a ride during the ongoing Chinese New Year holiday.

Chen's family added that Lin was notorious for dangerous driving and that Chen's friends had told her not to get into the car.
