Gusty winds cause damage to Kaohsiung New Year's venueCNA TAIPEI--Strong gusts of wind in Kaohsiung City yesterday leveled part of the venue set up for a New Year countdown concert as well as tents that were to be used as temporary ticketing booths for the event.
December 31, 2012, 12:12 am TWN The Kaohsiung meteorological station pegged the strongest wind at 17 meters per second before noon. A three-story-tall structure, which had been erected to hold up a large screen at the concert outside the Dream Mall, also collapsed. Several tents behind the main stage, as well as those that were to be used for Kaohsiung subway's temporary ticketing booths, also gave way. Meanwhile, a large billboard advertising Kaohsiung IT Month outside the venue and across the shopping mall was blown away. The organizers then sent some people to patch up the damage ahead of the New Year's Eve celebration. In addition to a concert, a fireworks display lasting more than three minutes is also expected to take place as part of the New Year celebrations.
