Kaohsiung student tries to kill parents

A high school student believed to be mentally ill injured his parents with a knife during an alleged attempt to kill them in Kaohsiung yesterday, police said.

His mother sustained serious stab wounds to her back and head in the attack at their home, and remains in a coma after being rushed to the hospital, police said.

The father and son were also injured during a struggle by the former to stop the attack, the police said, adding they were both in fair condition after being treated.

The 16-year-old student, surnamed Chang, who is from a top-three senior high school of the southern city, was said to have worked out a detailed plan to kill his parents.

Following the attack, the father showed police a photocopy he had kept of the alleged plan that the son had written down in a notebook, the United Evening New said.

The father told police he and his wife had taken their son to a psychiatrist this summer after he showed abnormal behavior.

Police found the notebook with the plan in the student's room, as well as two knives, a saw, bottles of acid and other items that the son had prepared allegedly for the murder, the paper said.

Medicine prescribed on July 27 by the psychiatry department of Kaohsiung's Veterans General Hospital was also found in his room, the paper added.

It is uncertain what kind of mental disease he is suffering from.

His teachers were cited by the United Evening News as describing the student as a quiet teenager whom had shown no signs of violence at school, though he often skipped classes and was late to school, the teachers said.

Police did not say what charges, if any, would be brought against the student.

According to police, the attack occurred at about 6:30 a.m. when the mother was already up and watching TV in the living room. The father was still asleep in his bedroom, as was their younger daughter, in her own room.

The son allegedly stabbed his mother from behind. The woman's screams woke the father and daughter. The father rushed to his wife's rescue and struggled with his son, while the daughter called police.
