Moderate 4.1 earthquake hits southern Taiwan

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale shook Kaohsiung County in southern Taiwan yesterday, but no immediate damage was reported, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The earthquake, which occurred at 2: 23 p.m., was centered 22.5 kilometers southeast of the Jiashian seismic station at a depth of 7.1 kilometers, seismologists said.

The temblor may have been an aftershock of a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Jiashian township March 4, according to Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center.
