Fishing vessel caught smuggling 589 boxes of foreign cigarettes

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- A Kaohsiung fishing vessel was caught smuggling 589 boxes of foreign cigarettes by the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) yesterday, local media reported yesterday.

The fishing boat raised the CGA's suspicion in the Kaohsiung Harbor as it only captured around 20 kg of fish during a 1.5-day travel on the ocean, which seemed below cost-effectiveness.

The CGA later decided to carry out a thorough search all over the vessel, discovering 589 boxes of smuggled cigarettes covered with black plastic bags under the deck.

The four suspects on the fishing boat, including the captain, surnamed Hung, were nabbed by the CGA on the scene, all of were quickly transferred to the Kaohsiung Prosecutors Office for investigation.
