Updated Saturday, March 13, 2010 11:04 am TWN, The China Post news staff Conflicts escalating between partiesThe latest round of conficts between Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu and her counterpart from Kaohsiung County, Yang Chiu-hsing, has seen the latter complain about the former's “persecution.” The pair is eyeing the leadership of the special municipality that will be formed by merging the city and county. A chief aide for Yang claimed yesterday the county magistrate had received citations for seven of his campaign billboards erected in the city, requiring him to remove them and pay a fine. The aide, Chen Hsi-chi, said Yang was dogged by police while soliciting support in the city during Chinese New Year. But the mayor's camp denied the accusations. A major aide of hers, Hung Chi-kun, said police officers were only stepping their patrolling efforts during the holiday period. Hung also claimed that none of Yang's campaign billboards in the city had been removed. But the city government will ask all political figures to remove their billboards from the public by May ahead of the typhoon season due to safety concerns, Hung said. The DPP is expected to hold a primary later this year to decide on its candidate for Kaohsiung, where the opposition stands a good chance of retaining its rule. Four other special municipalities — Taipei, Xinbei, Taichung and Tainan — will also elect their mayors at the end of the year. In Tainan, a traditional stronghold of the main opposition, five DPP hopefuls have registered for the primary. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
