This event was organized by the committee's director Juang Lain-hau, who came up with the idea in the last soup kitchen event serving Gingered Duck Hot Pots (薑母鴨) to the homeless when temperature had dropped. When a cold front swept through Taiwan and significantly lowered temperatures last Friday, volunteers reportedly began to prepare for the ingredients. The chicken dish replaced the duck dish because there is a duck scare with farms in Kaohsiung's Daliao Township allegedly contaminated with toxic chemicals. Yesterday since early morning, volunteers came under one roof to prepare for the popular dish. The tasty smell coming from the chickens simmering in ginger, sesame, oils, and rice wines, attracted long lines of homeless people. To ensure an abundant feast for up to 500 people, volunteers prepared rice, noodles, and bentou boxes, in addition to the hot pots. According to reports, many homeless showed gratitude for the committee thoughtful idea because winter is the most difficult season to survive on the streets. The traditional hot dish not only filled up stomachs, but also warmed up hearts. The committee's director, Juang, stated that with unemployment rate on the downward trend, the number of homeless in Taiwan has raised and more governmental assistance are needed. The ove Earth Committee is based in Kaohsiung City, and sets up a kitchen soup station every weekend to provide up to 500 free bentou boxes for the homeless or any family struggling to get by.
