Updated Tuesday, October 6, 2009 9:33 am TWN, The China Post news staff Police officer saves father on first CPR attemptChen Mong-chi took turns with two fire department officers and a volunteer performing CPR on and defibrillating Chen's father, who had suffered a heart attack, a Liberty Times report said. The father regained heartbeat and breathing by the time he arrived at the emergency room, despite not having medical signs of life for over 20 minutes, the report said. He was recuperating in the general ward as of yesterday and in good health, added the report. The Kaohsiung County Fire Department was cited as saying that it is a miracle that Chen's father had survived the incident without brain damage. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), a cardiac arrest victim's heart must be defibrillated quickly, because a victim's chance of surviving drops by seven to 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat isn't restored. Brain death and permanent death start to occur in just four to six minutes after someone experiences cardiac arrest. Chen first began to perform CPR on his 58-year-old father after the parent was found with no pulse or breathing after falling ill during dinner, noted the report.
