Kaohsiung to screen 'The 10 Conditions of Love' at film fest

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- Kaohsiung decided yesterday to defy Beijing by screening “The 10 Conditions of Love” in its film festival October 16-29.

Beijing tried to bully Kaohsiung into submission by withholding Chinese tourists from the southern Taiwan port city, which successfully hosted the World Games in last July.

Mayor of Kaohsiung Chen Chu, in the face of hoteliers who are complaining they have seen Chinese tourist bookings canceled, rescheduled a two-day showing of the documentary on Rebiya Kadeer, president of the World Uighur Congress, at a film library on last Tuesday and Wednesday, far ahead of the festival.

Liu Hsiu-ying, curator of the library and organizer of Kaohsiung Film Festival 2009, announced the controversial biopic would be shown as was originally scheduled.

“The decision is final,” Liu pointed out.

She said no dates have been fixed for screening the documentary at the festival.

“We'll make them known online as soon as they have been set,” she added.

The about-face decision comes after Premier Wu Den-yih barred the Uighur independence leader from Taiwan on Friday.

Wu's minister of interior, citing close relations between Rebiya Kadeer and her declared terrorist secretary-general Dolkun Isa, decided not to let her come to Taiwan at the invitation of the Guts United Taiwan, the Dr. Chen Wen-cheng Memorial Foundation, the Taiwan Association for Human Rights and the Taiwan Youth Anti-Communist Corps.

The Democratic Progressive Party urged the government to grant an entry visa to the Uighur leader.

Hoteliers in Kaohsiung are bracing for a further loss of Chinese tourists after Premier Wu went on the record by announcing the government will not ban the showing of the biopic.

The screening is protected by our constitutional grantee of freedom of expression,” the premier said.

“It's a basic human right, and we are not going to ban it,” Premier Wu pointed out.

China condemns Rebiya Kadeer as a separatist, charging her with instigating riots in Urumuqi on last July 5. Beijing retaliates against any country that welcomes the Uighur freedom fighter.
