Updated Sunday, September 20, 2009 11:22 am TWN, By Jamie Wang, The China Post Eco-friendly fuel system is adopted on Kaohsiung busesThe system works by electrolysis that transforms water into hydrogen and oxygen, which enhance combustion in the engine, said Alexander Tsai, manager of a research team at Epoch Energy and Technology Corporation. The improved combustion increases gas mileage, said Tsai, whose team developed the system. Figures provided by the company show that the device reduces around 20 percent of fuel consumption. By lowering the fuel consumption and improving the energy efficiency, the device reduces about 20 percent of the gas exhaust, Tsai told The China Post in a telephone interview. The system can save both driving costs and the environment, Tsai said. The present system is meant for large vehicles, but there is a promising market in smaller cars, said Tsai. A bus company in Kaohsiung has installed the device in its vehicles, which have been serving passengers since May this year, according to a press release from Epoch. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu lauded the system's contribution to environmental protection, said the press release. The Capital Bus Company, Taipei Bus Company and Metropolitan Transport Corporation — all running in Taipei — as well as the Kuo Kuang Motor Transportation, which offers island-wide services, have been testing the device, the release stated.
