Kaohsiung with 130,000 tons of storm trash

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- Kaohsiung City's Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) cleared approximately 135,400 metric tons of waste scattered by Typhoon Morakot off the streets of Kaohsiung in a three-day operation completed yesterday, utilizing the efforts of over 2,000 people who braved strong winds and heavy rains to return the city's streets to normal.

The majority of the debris was trees and signs which collapsed under Typhoon Morakot's heavy rains. The EPB began its clean-up operation early Friday, while the storm raged, sending out its people and heavy machinery to clear out potentially hazardous objects.

The EPB worked with the city's emergency operations center in the effort.
