CPC starts offering E3 fuel in Kaohsiung

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The state-run CPC Corp., Taiwan launched yesterday sales of environmental friendly E3 fuel for motorists in southern Kaohsiung City with an incentive of shaving prices by NT$2 per gallon below the price tag of traditional gasoline. Chu Shao-hua, president of CPC (standing for Chinese Petroleum Corp), personally started service at the five gas stations directly operated by the company in the largest city in southern Taiwan.

The E3 fuel is available at the CPC stations located on Jiangong Road, Zhonghua 3rd Rd., Sandoe 2nd Rd., Sandoe 3rd Rd., and Nantze Station.

Chu said CPC decided to support the policies of the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and the Bureau of Energy (BOE) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to promote cleaner fuels as well as to conserve energy and cut carbon dioxide emission, although the move means the company is selling the product below costs.

This makes Kaohsiung the second major metropolis in Taiwan, after Taipei which offers E3 fuel at eight CPC gas stations, to offer the bioalcohol product.

He explained that E3 fuel is a blending of 3 percent of bioalcohol — made from sugar and starch contents and fiber elements — with gasoline to reduce CO2 emission by 2.1 metric tons in every kiloliter of motor fuel

Chu encouraged motorists to use more E3 fuel to help improve air quality and slow down the process of global warming while can save substantial energy bills. CPC executives said nearly all automobiles manufactured after the year of 2001 can use E3 fuel. They suggested that vehicle owners confirm with their car dealers to make sure. City research reports, they said, that there is no need to modify the mechanical system of cars when using E10 — a mixture of up to 10 percent of bioalcohol with 90 percent of gasoline.

There is no much differences in terms of horsepower and energy efficiency when filling oil tanks with E3 fuel or E10 fuel, they said.

There has been no any case reported involving engine damage caused by E3 fuel after the company started supplying the new fuel in 2007, they added. The consumption of E3 fuel in Taiwan presently still trails behind biodiesel derived mainly from used cooking oil.

One percent of biodiesel is now added to all fossil diesel used by vehicles, motorcycles or machines running on diesel.

The biodiesel project is aimed at slashing consumption of the traditional diesel by 38.5 million liters each year, an equivalent of one million barrels of imported crude oil.
