Student performers in Kaohsiung prepare for World Games

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- Six teams of performers that will be cheering for six countries and areas in the upcoming World Games gave a preview of their presentations at a press conference in Kaohsiung City Thursday.

The 11-day World Games, which will be held in Kaohsiung City July 16-26, are expected to attract nearly 4,000 athletes from 90 countries and areas. The cheerleading teams from Kaohsiung schools have each chosen a participating country in the World Games that they will be rooting for, and some teams have been practicing since March 2007.

The teams will wear costumes representative of the countries and areas they chose and, during the Games, will cheer for the athletes from those countries.

At the press conference organized by the Kaohsiung City government to showcase the students' performances, a group of wind musicians from the host San-sin High School opened the show. They were followed by belly dancers who will be cheering for the Egyptian athletes, folk dancers from National Kaohsiung Hospitality College who will be rooting for competitors from Thailand, and teams from other schools in the city.

The 2009 World Games are expected to draw visitors from all over the world, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu said at the press conference, adding that it is an opportunity for Kaohsiung to develop into a cosmopolitan city through language, cultural and friendship exchanges.
