KRTC to offer discounts to I-Pass holders on MRT

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. (KRTC) said yesterday that it will offer discounted prices to I-Pass holders using the southern port city’s MRT, starting Oct. 22.

That is the date when regular fares will be applied to the two lines in the system. During the first week of the Orange line’s operations since Sept. 14, passengers were able to ride for free, while prices were set at just NT$15 for the Sept. 22 - Oct. 21 period on both the Red and Orange Lines.

The KRTC said that the level of discount for I-Pass holders has not yet been determined, although it had earlier planned to offer a 75-percent discount.

Huang Yi-chung, director of the KRTC’s Public Affairs Department, said that as the percentage of Kaohsiung residents using the MRT is relatively low, the company has had trouble boosting daily passenger numbers. Ridership on the system has remained at between 100,000 and 200,000 per day, with the number rising to around 250,000 on holidays, Huang said.
