Kaohsiung Orange Line gets the green light

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) approved Thursday the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp.’s (KRTC’s) application to launch a new MRT line, according to a ministry official.

The green light was given after the company resolved five flaws detected during an inspection of the 14.4-kilometer Orange Line by the ministry’s ad hoc safety committee Sept. 8-9, said Chi Wen-chung, director of the MOTC’s Department of Railways and Highways.

“The ministry has decided to allow KRTC to choose a launch date for Orange Line service,” Chi said late Thursday.

If the MRT operator can receive certification from the ministry by Friday, the line will begin service Sunday — the day of the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival — as promised, said KRTC Public Affairs Department director Huang Yi-chung Wednesday.

The Orange Line and the 28.9 km Red Line, already in service, constitute the Kaohsiung MRT system.
