Kaohsiung prosecutor probed for assault, affair

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- A prosecutor in Kaohsiung is being investigated for allegedly assaulting and injuring a reporter who was following him and a woman with whom he was suspected to be having an extra-marital affair, the Central News Agency reported yesterday.

The prosecutor, surnamed Hung, admitted that he lost his temper and beat a reporter from the Apple Daily, and he expressed remorse over the incident, said Chung Chung-hsiao, a senior prosecutor in Kaohsiung was cited by CNA as saying.

According to CNA, the married Hung checked into a motel with a woman Friday. Later when he and the woman were leaving in their car, Hung found out that the reporter — a woman from Apple Daily — was following and taking pictures of them.

Hung stopped the reporter, and allegedly beat her. The reporter is believed to have sustained injuries during the incident, the CNA said.

Police were called in to take their statements, but the reporter had yet to press charges against the prosecutor.

The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office will not decide how to handle the case until its own internal investigation report comes out, the CNA said.
