Kaohsiung City launches‘green’ free bus campaign

Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu said that during the three-month campaign, the city government will offer free rides on the port city’s 82 public bus lines every Thursday, and free tourist bus services on weekends.

Chen said that she estimates the program will attract 20 percent more bus riders during the three-month period, which will end on Sept. 14.

The free service is expected to cost the city about NT$30 million (US$988,500), but it is estimated that the program will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 170 tons, Chen added.

In addition to the “green Thursday” program, the major said, the city government will also set aside NT$30 million to launch a bicycle rental program at 20 locations throughout the city to encourage residents to ride bikes rather than drive vehicles.
