Five million passengers ride Kaohsiung MRT

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The cumulative number of passengers taking free rides on the mass rapid system in the southern city of Kaohsiung had exceeded five million as of yesterday afternoon, according to statistics released by Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. (KRTC), which operates the system.

Huang Yi-chung, director of KRTC’s Department of Public Affairs, thanked the public for its enthusiasm in riding the Kaohsiung MRT system’s Red Line, which opened March 9, and called for passengers to abide by the relevant regulations.

A total of 388,000 passengers took the MRT system Saturday, Huang said, adding that since the Red Line’s opening, there had been a daily average of 160,000 to 200,000 passengers on the system on weekdays, and a daily averge record of 420,000 on holidays.

KRTC is allowing passengers to ride the new north-south Red Line free of charge during a one-month trial period that ends April 6.

Covering 42.7 kilometers, the MRT system in the southern port city is comprised of two lines — the east west Orange Line and the Red Line. The Orange Line is scheduled to go into operation in August.
