Man nabbed for wielding knife outside Ma office

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- Police in Kaohsiung yesterday arrested a man who brandished a knife in front of a campaign office of Kuomintang presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou.

The man, surnamed Tsai, showed up in front of Ma’s campaign headquarters in the southern port city, pounded a knife on the glass door a few times, and shouted out some remarks before fleeing, police said.

Police later nabbed and questioned Tsai. Police did not say whether Tsai had been charged.

The Ma campaign expressed gratitude for the police’s swift action.

But it urged the ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s supporters, as well as the KMT’s, to remain calm and rational in the days leading up to the March 22 presidential election.

Neither violence nor threats should be involved in elections, it added.
