Kaohsiung County launches blood drive amid shortage

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The Kaohsiung County Government launched a four-day blood drive yesterday to deal with a supply shortage at the Kaohsiung Blood Center.

On the first day of the drive, one of the center’s bloodmobiles arrived at the square in front of the county hall to receive blood donations.

A center official said that the center currently has only 500 250-c.c. bags of type A blood, just over 1,000 bags each of type O and type B blood, and less than 100 bags of type AB blood, all of which are below the prescribed 7-day supply of 8,000 bags.

Noting that the number of blood donors tends to drop off during the Chinese New Year holidays, with less than 100 bags of blood being collected per day according to past experience, the official said that the blood drive was launched to increase the center’s supplies ahead of the holiday period.
