MJIB discovers smuggling of ketamine raw ingredient

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB) seized 232 kg of smuggled hydroxylimine hydrochloride (HCL) — a raw ingredient in the production of ketamine — in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, a MJIB official said yesterday.

Three suspects were arrested on charges of smuggling the ingredient classified as a grade-four drug, the official said.

MJIB agents proceeded with follow-up investigations after discovering nine ketamine plants last year as well as uncovering a total of 82 kg (kilograms) of hydroxylimine HCL in Taipei City, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan, and Changhua County in central Taiwan Jan. 9.

The MJIB discovered another 150 kg of hydroxylimine hydrochloride in Kaohsiung City Monday, in cooperation with the Kaohsiung Customs Office, while examining incoming cargo, the official said.

The three suspects arrested smuggled a total of 2,375 kg of hydroxylimine HCL over the past two years, realizing illicit profits estimated at NT$70 million (US$2.17 million), the official said. He went on that this amount of hydroxylimine HCL could produce approximately 1,400 kg of ketamine, and thereby posed a great threat to Taiwan’s society.
